Subject: Practicality

Kansas
Your not being practical.

First off, Salebarns have entire farms lots from a backgrounding program that you can pick a good calf out of with a little work. I don't know about the barns in your area but in this one, people by majority still use them to sell thier livestock. The cow end is where you have to be careful.

Secondly, Yes, a split is necessary. You admitted your primping and promping the cattle and trying to get a name made for yourself to start selling. That is from a breeders viewpoint. Most people are in this game as commercial cattlemen. What you are doing is in no way even remotely close to the commercial game. I know well enough if you are in this the way you state then you use special feeds. Noone is going to be buying 100 dollar a bag purina or whoever made feed for feedlot cattle to go to the slaughterhouse. That game is all about lbs put on for cheapest input cost. Your showing the cattle for flash and image. A commercial cattleman most definitely needs to watch the breeding but the special work put into making hair the way you want to induce certain looking muscle or hide imperfections in the calf is not what commercial cattle raising is about.

Your cattle can be compared to a car show.

Commercial standpoint we are like gm making the next new work truck and selling it in numbers yet desirable enough to still look good to a point. Not going to flash it up with a big thumpin stereo, bling bling wheels, mini steering wheel, dingalballs hanging from the rear view mirror, etc etc etc.

These jackpot show attitudes ruin it for the newbie kids with the limited funds and knowledge at the 4H level.

By all means, Carry on with what you are doing. It sounds like you have a plan and a goal and are well on your way to achieving it. But remember that your route you are taking is not practical from a commercial standpoint. If we tried to doctor up the calves to sell to a buyer or IBP for a finished product, we'd be laughed at like a blonde joke when we even hinted an out of reason price that wasn't jiving with the current market.

Two complete different games.
