One thing that has changed(I think) is the widening out of the basis when the barges stop running this time of the year. It used to be that if you didn't get your corn/beans moved by then you were screwed til spring. The big feed mills knew the river terminals weren't buying so they'd drop the price unless they were desperate for grain. Now it seems that the ethanol plants keep all the grain buyers competitive and keep trucks moving grain all winter long. Come spring a lot of bins are empty, has to be a factor for grain buyers.
