Subject: RE: Ear Tagging 300# Gilts

We'er still a little green. Wife is chief mower around here and its been a couple weeks since she "cut" grass but shes been pulverizing leaves the last few days.

I've built a couple, same basic design. First time they may stick their head in but after that its a battle. An automatic head gate like some cattle chutes have would be helpful and somebody probably made one at one time. Maybe still do.

If you are doing more than one procedure, drawing blood & tagging ,then the chute would probably be the best. Our vet has some little gal that snares and holds while he does the blood. Small ---meaning like 110# or so. And I've seen her tackle a 700# boar and she won. The tagging thing really isn't a big deal in a group if you take a little time for the group to crowd up and do the ones that have their ears exposed. Then stir them up and get others exposed. It works good if 2 are working at it but not both in with the group at the same time. One needs to be on the outside filling the tagger and if convenient he can tag some from outside the pen. Both need to be aware of where the other is and what they are doing though.
