Well, maybe get to the dealer first and pay him off to sell that shiny new automatic equipped truck to him. He'll have to TRY to tear out the tranny in a new pickup properly equipped to pull a trailer.
A few extra thousand now may save the cost of a new truck in a few years. You both win!
That, and I'd tell him that when he remembers to put it back in gear and set the e brake, he can choose whatever he wants. Until then, take the auto!
