Subject: RE: How about a slapper?

Masonville, Iowa
Tatoos are the way to go. I put the ID number on both sides of the neck and on both rumps. The green ink works betterr than the black. Use a tooth brush to apply ink to slapper between each slap. Make sure not to put the number right on the shoulder because a shoulder sore will mess them up. I took apiece of plywood and drilled holes in it to organize the digits. I have had 10+ parity sows and the numbers are still easily read.
Switched to RFID tags for the new gestation system and the tags have to be in the left ear...talk about a PITA for a right handed person to tag! I will still tatoo everything. I have been getting my tatoo supplies through QC Supply. I would recommend the ceramic digits because they a lighter weight. I use 4 digit numbers starting with 0001. We have about 625 sows and we are only up to 3350 in 10 years.
