For carcass I.D. you wouldn't use a needle tattoo type setup. You would simply use a stamp and you wouldn't slap it on there either because it would smear or the ink would "bleed" away from the intended site and still cause a messy i.d.
We have a local buying station that used to slap the live hog with the tool you picture with sharp pins(needle tattoo??)coated with some kind of paste/dye. I'm pretty sure this was used to identify the carcass hanging on the rail as your hogs would be mixed with other producers on a load. Don't know as they still use this or not as we usually send ours direct now.
Looked at the link you posted and apparantly the numbers stay visible on the skin too. I probably shouldn't/couldn't use one because she'd have # from her head to here tail.(-;> |
