Lancaster, OH | When I was doing this we tried to pick the competitor products they were going to throw at us, not what we knew we could beat. As said above, winning plots is easy but you're after the best yields across a farm with a package of products.
However, if you are interested in a companies products because of experience or the rep, look at their data and then verify its validity with third party tests. Here, we use OSU trials, FIRST trials, etc. The tools mentioned for ICorn is also a good source.
OSUs results just came out and DEKALB beat "P" by over $12/acre with what each company chose to put in across all locations in Ohio. Both companies products were heavily traited so that was pretty equal. That $12/acre is a $31/unit advantage across a lot of conditions. I would look at that as an indication that I could get a better performing package for my farm. A dominant regional that enters performed at a $39/acre disadvantage but I'll bet that their plots showed they win. You have to use all the sources.
Ultimately you have to make the choice based on your research and some local experience. | |
