Again, thanks for posting this -- I was aware of this bit of research, but had lost track of who had done it.

I am very skeptical of the results, however -- or I should say, I am very skeptical of how those results translate into the field. First, I see many wheat seeds sprouting and dying when seed-to-soil contact is inadequate. Perhaps this is a failure of the soil to continue to supply the water vapor in sufficient quantity to sustain the process (usually only the radicle develops, and not much of a shoot, before the seed dies).

Also, the results sure as heck don't apply to many/most other crops. Soybeans are notorious for dying if seed-soil contact is inadequate. Corn and sunflowers, too.
