Freeburg, IL | It all depends on your historical yields or whatever yields you use I guess. We don't use starter and our historical corn yields are a good percentage better and our bean yields are almost the same percentage worse in east central IL. So by using your costs you shared and removing starter fertilizer and adjusting the bushels to our yields, corn is a $165/acre winner.
Now down here in southwestern IL, it is typically a different story. However, we also saw that drought can destroy bean yields as well as corn and I think Brassring will attest that there is never a good safety net.
I think the freeze and the drought showed us 'here' that all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea. I think most like to farm on a 'calculated risk' strategy rather than a total gamble.
