Subject: Wheat emergence

Rolla, ND
Carl,

I don't know anyone that did it in winter wheat, but in spring wheat the University of Manitoba at Winnipeg did a real interesting thing a few years ago, they actually followed the emergence and yield of all the plants in a plot.

What they found was those plants that came up the first two days were important for yield, after that, they were more weeds than crop. Yield dropped way down but they still grew and took resources.

I'll see if I can find a reference. It's been awhile. It made quite an impression on me because it was one of the examples of real research I ran into among a lot of junk.
