SE Nebraska | I'm working in an area that has a few issues with Na content in the irrigation water, and as a result, dealing with a few salt affected soils. These aren't your textbook saline/alkali soils, pH is always below 7.0. Usually base saturation is from 2%-7% Na and 15% to 22% Mg.
I've never been happy with gypsum recommendations from labs or salintiy appraisals. Can grow decent continuos corn on these fields, but soybeans are ussually a disaster. I can't say that we have enough Na to create major toxicity issues, yield drops seem to be related to poor soil tilth. I've brainstormed many times about how we can VRT gypsum based on soil type, Na and Mg%, CEC, pH, and even yield. I ussually just end up going off base saturation and how much gypsum the producer is willing to apply.
Was just wondering what the rest of you that apply gypsum are doing for a gypsum rec. A few pointers would be great. | |
