Subject: RE: Squash Bug control in Pumpkins

Oklahoma
We are rotating some what. A small waterway splits the field, about 1.5 acres on each side. Last year we were on the far side of the field from the bees. This year we are close. We rotate with Corn and othe fall produce. We are hauling the pumpkins out anyways, so the pick it yourself is out at the moment until something better comes along. The squash bugs only seem to be close to the waterway, where they could have migrated from last year. One thing that may hurt this year is the residue since we did not keep the ground worked all year. Basically disced it once first of November, then burned down twice this spring prior to planting no-till pumpkins, so the bugs have a haven in the residue.

How much lime are you putting down? We are planning to lime anyways in the neighboring field so that could be possible. Are you clean tilling the fields during winter?

Just FYI, this is our second year at this and we certainly are learning, but as they say Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained and hindsight is always 20/20.
