I agree with the fact that not all the nitrogen is available immediately. I like to see alfalfa sprayed and plowed up the fall previous to going to corn. I have good luck recommending 60- 80 lbs of nitrogen for the following years corn crop either plowed under or applied in the spring before planting. Your phosphorous and potash recommendations I would have to make off of a soil test. I am not saying this is the only correct recommendation out there but it has worked well for my growers. I did a yield check on a customers alfafa breaking that was yielding 190 bu/acre this fall and the only nitrogen we had on was 28 lbs from the 18-46-0 last fall and then we foliar fed another 30 lbs of nitrogen with the shot of round-up we sprayed. I was pretty impressed. Not trying to add to the confusion, but this has been working for my customers.
