One thing on the plastic esophageal feeders.

A neighbor called me to come remove one from a calf one day. Apparently it was sort of old and the probe snapped off in the calf and of course the esophageal reflex just carried it on down. Relatively simple surgery to get it out and the calf was good as new.

Keep those things out of the sun and if they seem at all brittle, get a new one!

the ones with the attached bag are simple. straddle the calf like coyote hunter says
hold the bag by the top handle/loop and with the probe sticking down from the same (right) hand.
Tip the calf's nose up with left hand. open it's mouth and push the tube in.
Hold it in place with the hand holding the calf's nose up and that frees up your other hand to raise the bag. If you clamp off the little slider clamp, then you need to position it so it's easily accessable with the hand holding the probe and the calf's nose BEFORE you clamp it off.
