NC
Instead of thinking number of head needed for a load you need to be thinking in lbs to maximize what you get for them.
Selling in full trailer loads will get you more money/lb. We try and aim for 48,000-49,000 lbs.
50 x 800 is only 40,000lbs .

As Mark said you can stack the deck some by buying the latter calves with more frame(same weight) or just bigger. But we find that if we keep them long enough they tend to even out with some of the first calves not gaining as well and some of the last calves gaining great. And most evening up in the middle. We also buy extras so we can cut off the freaks at either end of the spectrum and narrow the spread.

The tighter the individual spread is, the more they will offer-- but total weight maxing out is more important to them right now IF they are being shipped very far.
