| I'm raining my own a the moment. Haven't been around a cow since 4-H 20 years ago. Wife's grandpa gave us a 500 lb steer in return for 1/4 when processed. If I budget my usual meat spending back to the calf and processing, I can do this for a long time. I agree that the $1,500-$1,800 is too big of a chunk of money at one time. Maybe if you took plastic for payment? I have discovered that I can buy boneless skinless chicken breasts for almost $1/lb less than 85% ground in the store. I love my red meat, but money is money and I can do a lot with chicken breasts.
Side note, I have also heard that the fastest growing hobby right now is gardening and canning. I'll admit to jumping into both the last few years.
