I butchered a few calves 900- 1000 lbs this year- they were on full feed (growing ration) and no wheres near finished.
I was very impressed with the meat and so were the people I gave it to(thats my charity every year).
I was also very surprised that the cost /lb of meat still came in comparable with grocery store prices.
that may be the way to go for freezer beef-- a smaller animal with less money/time tied up in it.
Mine are Angus and Angus/Hereford cross, not much frame, little butterballs. They weigh around 1050-1100 at a year of age, and hang a 650-700# carcass. I've only ever had 1 guy want a whole calf, like Jim says, many people can't afford that much money at one time and also the lack of freezer space is a big issue. |
