Small sales barns need more than just a small run of cattle to stay viable. Local sales barn sells a half hour of household/misc stuff, lumber and impounded cars occasionally, firewood and hay/straw and then the cattle so they typically get a decent crowd. They don't weigh the animals, rumor is the scale works but owner doesn't want to pay to have it certified. I've told the guy that leases it that he'd sell more cattle if he fixed the scale and made sure the ringman that used to work there never came back. Its one thing to pay a little too much for an animal by misjudging the weight, its a totally different thing to buy a group of poor cattle that some jockey is collecting from 10 other sales barns and trying to pass off as coming from one farm. You can't prevent all the games that go on, but being accomplices to the lowlifes in the cattle business only hurts the business.
