Ludington/Manistee MI area | I'm a smalltime farrow to finish grower (hogs are a sideine to my cash crop operation) looking for others thoughts on breeds of sows that are diposed to throwing larger litters and doing a decent job at raising them. When the last gilt that farrowed came out of labor grabbed her piglets in her mouth and threw them to the ground till she killed them if they dared make a sound, the only way to stop her was to give her a human distraction. When I first started in hogs all I did was the finishing end things went smoothly. The last 14 months have been very trying in the hog division and looking for some sows that are a little more forgiving. Last winter was a boar that lost his drive if you know what I mean this winter the coop sold us some feed with distilers that clumped up and went bad causing me to have 5-6 litters adorted. |
