I would think in the long run the barn over the lots will be more environmentally friendly. You can also do a pitted barn and get cost share. If you do a full concrete deep bedded barn vs a pit it may not be that much cost difference since your building size is half of a bedded barn. Could check into the cost share there also. I looked at Iowa states feed efficiency data once on hoops vs open lots and am not sure it really showed that it paid on feed efficiency alone. Holstein steers will probably grade better out of a building. I would also add more square footage for holsteins over beef. Garvo's buildings are more in line with larger square footage and more bunk space. I think some of the hoops are too narrow and they are not allowing enough bunk space. The NRCS buildings have to also guarantee a full 15 year warranty and thus equal higher cost.
