Driftless SW Wisconsin

This is a different variety than I planted the previous few years. This is a triple stack RR from Legend Seeds, a small seed co in WI. Previously I had been planting a similar Kaltenberg triple stack for several years.

It may also be the cob is just smaller on this Legend variety.

This one has stood well even into January with high winds. Yet the stalks seem not too large and the cattle seem to like the husks, upper plant and leaves.  I would much rather have them eat the cobs and turn them into manure.

Variety selection is very important in this grazing of standing corn.  You want it to stand but still be palatable, not like a tree trunk.  BTW the outer rows stand along the wire are thinned by the turkeys, pheasants and who knows what else. This is a decent stand of corn for clay hillside strips.
