"over tank" on the summer grass. Over time they get BIG.
Thus over time you end up carrying more maintenence cow weight than is optimal.

Upside to fall calfers is those 6 to 650 wt calves tend to sell like gold in the Spring.

Only way to save some feed in your fall cow carrying cycle is bring em in to limit feed in the Spring thru a bunch of Summer.

Maybe just back your fall deal up to early summer calfing.
Not tough to do: Most of em will back up 60 days per year on good going, So in 2 years you can back em up say 120 days.

Basically in the change, your 50 acre pasture goes to the Spring / Summer calfers and your 12 acre pasture cycles to fall calfers.

Worst thing about Feb thru April calfers is that most everyone calfs then.
That can tend to slug the market because alot of usa calves for sale at the same time.

So with your late Spring / Summer calves on a short wean deal you can keep em green and simply grow an extra 100 lbs of frame as comped to a fall calf.

Nother thing, if you dry out regularly in the summer ( as you explained 011 ) then your already on a limit feed fall calf program.
Maybe that's the way to shift the whole deal if you produce more fall grass and not much summer grass in your area.
