Marengo, Ia. | I'm 34 and just getting a small herd started. Pasture is harder to find than crop ground around here. I rent all my land so I can't even start feeding calves if I wanted. I have seen a few empty feedlots pop up that I will ask the landowners if they would like to rent but most don't want to see (or smell or hear) the calves again.
When I tell people I want to have cows I just get a blank stare. I say, If the people who like and want to raise cattle don't, who will???
I have no immediate family in farming and am starting on my own and feel the need to diversify my farming operation, but the cattle/pasture part has definitly been harder to expand. | |
