Subject: RE: Feed conversion

Tommy - 1/5/2012 18:41 The loss in feed conversion (on outside pigs) will more than make the building payment on a new barn--assuming you are sure you want to stay in for the life of the building loan. I would sell the $6 corn before putting pigs outside, more profit selling the corn than working outside thawing waterers and pitching manure. I had both outside lots and brand-new buildings side-by side for several years and total cost of production(including the building payment and depreciation) was ALWAYS less inside. Feed conversion is terrible outside.

From our comparisons of feed conversion (inside vs outside) it won't make the whole payment but it will put a pretty good dent in the building payment.

Outside hogs are getting fewer every year and high feed cost has definitely sped up the decline.
