The last study I saw showed 24 hours was ok, but usually many of the sort sections of the long pens are split by a feeder anyway so the pigs get feed. I have the 36 pen layout with center aisle which makes the 'sunday morning/run through chores' have some value. The longer 18 pen rooms with the aisle to one side of the room force walking pens every time - just can see problems from 50' away. It's important to be in the pens, but it's really nice to be able to do a quick check once in a while when time is short and have some confidence I'm not missing a major problem.

I've tried some pre sorting and it seemed to take more time and work than just sorting them when we load early in the morning - it takes an hour at first then once the pens are thinned out it takes about 30 minutes per load. I like the idea of pre sorting, but I'm thinking it won't work for me unless I go to pens set up for it.

thanks,

Pat
