Years ago Penn State had a single eight because someone thought it would be nice to have an observation window on one side. It was the biggest disaster you can imagine. An old side opening four would have been faster, and that's not saying much. There is some advantage to having cows walk down an exit alley. The time they are standing is critical for the teat to close up. Cows that have an opportunity to lie down immediately after being milked tend to show more mastitis, Having them walk to the feeding area encourages them to remain standing for awhile. | |
