Although now, a lot of the landlords around here have taken to calling the fertilizer plants, seed dealers etc and penciling whatit cost to plant an acre of crop. Then they watch market reports, talk at the coffee shop to find out yields and then figure what they want for cash rent. This also lets them figure how much profit you can have also.
