What kind of clay are you talking about, at there are several common types. I am guessing that you may be dealing with the swelling/shrinking montmorillonite clay in Texas. But the chemistry is different in each type of clay and you just about need a Phd in soil chemistry to sort this stuff out. I just remember this as a some magic that the soils prof talked about that I learned enough about to pass the test and did not figure it was a that important to my life. Check out the textbook, "The Nature and Properties of Soils" by Nyle Brady. That will keep you scratching your head for a few days.
