Subject: Why wouldn't seed prices go up?

Hanford, CA
2006 Commodity Prices:
Wheat - 3.85/bu
Corn - 2.73/bu
Soybeans - 6.30/bu
Cottonseed - 200/ton
2007 Commodity Prices:
Wheat - 6.81/bu
Corn - 3.75/bu
Soybeans - 9.91/bu
Cottonseed - 250/ton

The actual seed value has gone up - 77%. 37%, 57%, & 25% respectively. Most companies price in terms of gross profit margins, so I would suspect germplasm prices to increase by the following for '08:

Wheat - $4/bag
Corn - $1.50/bag
Soybeans - $5/bag
Cotton - $3.50/bag

After taking into account price of fuel, chemical increase in price for treatments, etc...I would tack on 3% to your 2006 price and then you get your seed price in a bag, treated.

I hope that alfalfa seed prices go through the roof so that I can be offered a higher price for the seed I grow. I want to spend $30/bag for soybean germplasm...that means commodity price is running about $22/bu.
