Faunsdale, AL | I figure there's hope for one as long as she keeps herself in a normal "cow lying down" position with her feet in normal position and everything. Then if they will crawl around on grass or soft bedding, even better. When they can't keep their feet up under themselves and stay upright on their own, or they "put down roots" and just dig a hole and lie in it, I don't have much hope.
Your young heifer is likely a more athletic animal than most of the dairy cows I deal with. Young and lighter weight seems to help, but it all depends on the injury. I would make an attempt or have the vet out to check for fractured hips etc. No sense in putting her through a lot if there's a fracture. Might make beef if you slaughtered her yourself right away, but not if you wait a week. | |
