Subject: Re: Hay grinding

Macoupin county Illinois
this is off topic, but my neighbor has a vertical mixer, he told me it takes around 30 minutes to grind a round bale of hay, All things considered i.e. fuel , labor, tractor hrs. , time to feed the cattle, i'm thinking maybe he should consider feeding long stem hay, any comments? I don't know of any custom grinders in this area, not enough cows i guess. Maybe a better option would be to unroll a limited amount of hay each day. With the price and somewhat limited hay supplies in this area the old practice of setting out round bales all winter is fast becoming obsolete.
