Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | I think he's talking about the husks and cobs from the processor, not a chopped silage.
The stuff will flow a river of sugary water from the time the first load is dumped until well after the last load has been piled and packed. The runoff can get pretty ripe, and there will be a lot of it, so plan ahead.
If managed right, the piles don't smell too bad. One guy we chop for has his sweet corn waste silage pile about 150' from his house (though the runoff is piped much farther away). If not managed right, the pile will stink to high heaven and people for miles downwind will know it's there.
