Jake I am not sure depth has as much to do with it. Making sure every plant has the taproot cut and crown buried is what is important. Even a great plow job isn't always 100%. A plow can cut the crowns off into 8-10" pieces and leave a little of the crown exposed. Those sections are just long enough that I have seen them regrow. I'm not saying they are going to ever grow into a big, tough hard to kill plant in another crop, but they can overwinter and survive-enough to be a weed in next crop.

That is why we use the rototiller first, cuts the crowns up into little short pieces. Then plow deep and bury the pieces-no alfalfa. The rototilling is more effective than the plowing I think, but most ground it is the best chance to plow it anyway.
