More and more we are seeing that there is no one answer to your question. First of all you need at least a basic, couple shovels mixed together type soil test. They can be done quickly. Fertilizer is pretty expensive to go blind - unless you have some extra cash.

The N removed by a bushel of dry corn taken off of the field is 0.6-.7 lb/bu. Some of that is natural.

But the how, when, and where applied relative to the plant makes a big difference of how much is needed. jmho.
