Subject: Shallow roots

NE Mo
At the progress show, in the corn field, I say some stalks lifted from the ground. I pulled a few, and thought they had a shallow root system. Four inch and not much deeper. I suppose they had a wet spring, or summer to cause this.
In looking at our fields here, I see the same thing. We did have one major rain very early when the corn was in maybe the 4-5 leaf stage, but very dry the rest of the year, but we have shallow roots here as well. We are in a claypan soil area, but have had better root systems other years. Lots of stalk rot and some down corn too. But we should finish corn harvest this coming week in our area. We are finished on our farm.
Any ideas??? Most corn here is fall applied N P K. One pass the a FC and plant. Looking at roots, I don't see the horizontal roots I should see in compacted soils, but I am sure we have a layer there. But the roots don't seem to be deep enough to even get to that layer.
