It's not the algae so much as the bacteria in it that under the right conditions with extreme heat temps will cause toxins that will kill the livestock.
I highly recommend reading that article when you get a chance I put above in the link. Some big words in there that I don't know if I could even pronounce correctly but it is something that every livestock producer in a hot climate area should know imo.
