If you don't already have a rice bar (double cutter bar) on the Macdon I highly recommend finding one. Other than that I've seen my neighbor put spacers on the bolts that hold the rear grates up to get more clearance and allow slugs to pass through easier.
I also think if the Shelbourne heads are a little easier on the machine but in some conditions have more losses. Rice that is down "fluffy" like you describe would be a piece of cake for the stripper. We've been running one of each for the last five years and picked up over 500 acres after hurricane Rita. I upgraded to a RSD24 this year so I've got a 97 RX66 off a 2388 for sale if you think it would suit your needs. $7500
