Subject: Re: winter wheat

When is the best time to plant wheat in Northern Iowa? Probably never is a very good time IMHO, unless you need the straw and want to feed it. If you need to grow wheat, one of the few things I learned in ISU Agronomy class, the rule of thumb in IA is no winter wheat north of I-80. That leaves you with HRS...... plant in the spring. Market's closer too, Minneapolis, maybe even Mankato or RedWing.

Actually I think it'd be fun to try some. Heck, maybe even some SRW, even though it probably would winter kill. Small grains here are usually lucky to cover average rents, the straw will has to cover everything else.
