South-central Nebraska | My stalk quality isn't any worse than anyone else in the area. I just want to have them even better. Now for what it is worth, I do have some corn laying over, broken etc. this year. The wind and hail we had around August 21st and 23rd left me wondering why anything stood.
I have heard of chloride helping stalk quality. Any truth to this? I split apply liquid N injected on my irrigated ground. Yield goal of 200-210. I apply 150 lbs N corn on bean and 180 corn on corn. With the split apps I haven't seen N def and my late season stalk tests are almost always "good." I take regular soil tests and use a dry fertilizer program as well.
Genetics is probably the easiest change but the better stalks and roots hybrid normally yields less than the less healthy race-horse. I will plant some better standing hybrids for the insurance of plant health but most often plant the higher yielding hybrids as well. These are the ones I want to try to improve upon | |
