SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | This year lack of water in june and july increased canabilization of the nutrients stored in the stalk to feed the ear. Lots of stalk rot around here. Not much you can do about lack of water(except irrigate) which is the foundation of EVERYTHING else the plant does and needs.
So reducing stress in many different ways is one thing you can do. Disease resistance and genetic selection is another. Harvestable yield is still the most important. Yield pays the bills. I would not just look for corns with good stalks as it is only PART of the puzzle.
Triple stack corns for example give you protection from corn borers which can stress the plant, also give protection from rootworms giving you better roots which in turn absorb more water keeping stress from sucking nutrients from the stalk. RR corn allows you to spray roundup with NO stress to the plant unlike the banvel type products which stress the plant.
