Murfreesboro, Tennessee | I am definitely not as knowlegable about crop insurance as I need to be (or as others on this forum), but I have an issue that I need some help. I planted corn early this year (3rd week of March). The Easter freeze killed everything I had that was up to a stand (about 150 acres). Adjuster came out and gave his insightful opinion that yes indeed it was dead.
I went the seed dealer and could only find enough corn seed to replant about 1/2 of my frozen acres. The remaining 75 acres was planted to cotton. This was OK with me since I had gone a little heavy on the corn anyway and it was getting too late to plant additional corn acres for my area and expect a decent yield.
I was issued a check (just last week) on the portion of the acres that I replanted to corn (75 acres), but not on the acres replated to cotton. I was OK with this, but what has really ticked me off, is that I just received a bill and they are charging a premium on the acres of corn that was originally planted, but froze out (all 300 acres). Called the agent and he as apologetic, but stated that they needed to charge me for all 300 acres because it was reported to FSA that way, and that the last plant date for corn had not passed.
At no time did anyone (agent, adjuster, etc.) tell me what I should or should not do with regards to these acres. I planted cotton because seed was not available and it was getting too late to plant corn and make a decent yield. I was making the best decision for my operation, not based on receiving a payment from an insurance company. Is this normal? Shouldn't the agent or adjuster let me know something? Should I just move on and consider this a learning experience?
Sorry to whine. Any thoughts or suggestions? | |
