Tall fescue will plug tile lines 4 ft. deep also, although we don't have any in waterways that are that deep. Since we figured this out about 10 years ago or so, if we are installing tile and need to cross a waterway, we put in a piece of solid tile and let it extend 5 feet or so past the waterways edge on each side.
