Prepare the soil, fertilize or lime as necessary, spread seed, Lay out bales of straw or hay, cut strings and then run over with bush cutter to spread. If you can run a drill over the straw, it will help to pin it down.
If you want to economize, but still use mats, I would run the mats continuous down the bottom of the channel instead of in strips across it.
