Potassium levels will help the most with stalk strength on the nutrient side of things. Potassium does many wonderful things in the plant with improving stalk strength being one of the most important. After that genetics will play a role as will planting depth. Don't be afraid to plant 2.25 - 2.5 inches deep just make sure you have high quality high germ (warm &cold) seed.
