| The tires I used for 6 tank installations were 12' diameter. The top sidewall cut out completely. I installed the Watson valve float in the center of the tank. I set a 6" x 8' treated corner post on each side of the tire and bolted a 13' 6" guard rail on each side of the posts with 1/2" x 4" lag bolts. The float comes up in the middle and is somewhat protected if an animal gets in the tank. The big 12' dia tank and quick recovery of the 1" Watson valve minimizes crowding. The supply line on this water system is all 1 1/2" dia HDPE pipe including curb stop/drains. I reduced to 1" with brass fittings right at the valve in the tank. Smaller calves have got in the tank and get out on their own. My tanks are relatively shallow. I wouldn't want one of the real deep tire tanks. I've seen some a calf or even a cow could get in and not get out. Here are some links with pics to give you a general idea.
