Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | We used to grow under straw bales, but not in them. Had problems getting potatoes out early, seemed it was always too wet to plant them when they should be planted. Finally set round bales in the winter where we wanted to plant them, when it came time for potatoes, we just spaced them on top of the ground, and unrolled straw bales over the top. I used a loader to pull off the straw when they were ripe, put them in a wheelbarrow, and ate them. A few years it didn't work so good, some years it worked great. But most of the time we had all the potatoes we wanted to eat, and there wasn't much work involved in growing them.
