local coop manager has dubbed it "crazy corn" He says it is the result of a fungus entering the stalk at a certain stage early in the growth of the corn plant, usually a result of being under water. Some low lying fields around here (most were flooded at least once this year) have been reported to have anywhere from 20% to 50% of the stalks showing this problem and what's worse, any stalk with this fungus won't have a productive ear on it. |
