Leesburg, Ohio | We usually start selling a crop the winter BEFORE it's planted, but only about 10 or 20%. Then up to maybe 50% or so by harvest. Then sell the rest out of the bins thru the next winter/spring/summer. We also use Chicago futures hedges and options, but you can do fine just forward cash contracting with your locals.
On farm storage will almost always pay, even if you only store until Dec or Jan, because of the wide basis during harvest. (Basis = futures price - cash price). Building a bin yourself with help from the neighbors is sometimes a possibility. Cargill will pay for a bin (not the concrete, wiring, etc.) if you contract with them.
