Rape costs more per bushel than rye. I don't see why mixing in rape would lower the price from straight rye. Just doesn't make sense.

And is it rape or canola? Rape is pretty strong, just like eating mustard. Just about makes the smoke come out the nostrils. I would think canola would be a better choice. Realize though that whatever he is doing, he's likely brownbagging someone's protected variety. So be cautious.

It is possible he is mixing in left over certified rape seed to get rid of it. It can be cheaper to basically give it away in cases where germination is dropping or the variety isn't going to be sold. Treated seed can rapidly turn into toxic waste.
