Little River, TX | I bale 14" X 18" face and 35" long & get a 55 lb bale.
The reason for the 55 lb bale is that is what the local market here is looking for. The 35" length because to get a good tight bale that will retain it's shape in the stack that is the length needed.
This is regardless of cutting or for grass or alfalfa.
My bales at 55 lbs will be 35 bales to the ton.
If you are going to a horse facility, here a few thoughts. Alfalfa has a lot more energy per pound than grass hay. Feeding straight alfalfa to a casual horse will fatten the horse, or encourage bad habits if limit fed.
If the horse facility stalls the horses, and also has some cattle they can try this. Use a grass hay for bedding. The horse will nibble the grass bedding till it becomes soiled. Then pull the now enriched hay out and feed it the cattle, and they will prosper. | |
